No, say Paul and Jane Harper of Carey Road, ‘cause that‘s exactly what happened â€" sort of! With Oakville gaining notoriety as a prime locaâ€" tion for the film industry, the Harpers got a knock on the door one cold wintry night about a month â€" after Christmas. It was an assistant locai er who had found the perfect home for a C movie â€" it didn‘t matter that the Harpers were out . and the babyâ€"sitter answered. l By WILMA BLOKHUIS He identified himself as Geoff Smither, of North Pole Productions, of Toronto. The sitter called the Harpers. They called Smither, and his offer proved to be genuine â€" their house was wanted for the making of ‘The Santa Clause,‘ a Walt Disney Pictures Christmas feature film for people of all ages, desâ€" tined for worldwide release. The Harpers were told they needed a house with lots of evergreens on a quiet residential street. "They were looking for a certain style and shape of house," begins Paul. hc In H:; wl East Oakville home used for hit Christmas movie TRAINING â€"hildren of all ages are invited to join us by the Kâ€"Mart entrance into the mall to help awaken Santa from a deep sleep â€" bring along your alarm clocks! Scott Calvin is also the divorced father of Charlie, played by sightâ€"yearâ€"old Eric Lloyd. ‘The Santa Clause‘ is Allen‘s major motion picture debut. It gave Paul a rare opportunity to meet his teleâ€" vision hero â€" and to have his picture taken in ‘Home Improvement‘ style in his basement! And, Jane got to know, and was photographed with, Wendy Crewson, who played Laura, Charlie‘s mother in the film. Turns out Crewson grew up in Oakville â€" she looks right at home in this movie. In fact, ‘The Santa Clause‘ has a strong Oakville flavor, complete with scenes filmed at George‘s Square, downtown along Lakeshore Road â€" there is a caroling scene where Oakyville‘s traditional Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is held every year, a house at the corner of Chisholm and Walker streets was Scott Calvin‘s home, and Santa‘s sleigh rode the night sky over Oakville, with glittering lights outlining the town and its harbor.
