This year‘s Oakville Santa Claus Parade will feature six bands, including the Burlington Teen Tour Band, which has performed in festivals across North America, Europe and the Far East. Joining them will be a perennial crowd favorite from Burlington the Top Hat Marching Band, complete with its dancing conductor, comes to town. Look for five drum corps in the parade, including big bands from Hamilton and Scarborough. The Oakville Shrine Club will host 19 Shrine units in this year‘s parade, which not only includes the Oakville Shriners Drum Corps, but also a steel band and an oriental band. In addition, there will be the Temple Unit‘s ancient fire truck, a 1888 street car, motorcycle escort, scooters and stunt drivers. The Niagara Falls Shrine Club will bring the ‘Maid of the Mist‘ and the Brampton Peel Shrine Club return with their mini goâ€"carts. Plus, the Shriners bring their usual array of clowns and other surprises to delight parade watches of all ages. Another service club is also playing a major role in this year‘s parade. The Oakville Kinsmen Club will, as they have done in past years, walk ahead of the parade to collecting nonâ€"perishable food and cash donations for Fareshare and the Salvation Army. And the Knights of Columbus and Oakville REACT will keep the 100 entries organized as they move along the parade route. Yes, the annual Oakville Santa Claus Parade is very much a community effort, involving hundreds of volunteer hours to get it organized. This year‘s parade is headed by a 14â€"member comâ€" mittee chaired by Cathie Mahoney, manager of the Laurentian Bank on North Service Road. The committee has been meeting monthly since January â€" except during the summer â€" to plan this year‘s event. The budget for this Saturday‘s parade is about $10,000, which was raised through donations from local business. Most of the funds cover the cost of bands. Parade sponsors include Shell Canada, Command Property Maintenance, Oakâ€"Land Lincoln Mercury, Laurentian Bank, Moen, SmithKline Beecham, Downtown Oakville BIA, Oakville Legion Branch 114, Longo‘s Fruit Markets, O‘Connor MacLeod, Witco, Claude‘s Vacuum Shop, Allcolour Paint, Monenco AGRA, Vacâ€"Aero, Tim Donuts, Vinylgraphics, Town of Oakville, Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, Oakvilleâ€"Trafalgar Rotary Club, Kerr Cadillac, Budds® Motors, Kennedy Ford, and Lorne Scots Cadets.
