That was the message Liberal finance critic, Gerry Phillips, delivered to 230 party supporters, Thursday night. He was speaking at a $125â€"aâ€"plate fundraising dinner, staged by the Oakville South Provincial Liberal Association. It was the first major fundraising effort to support the camâ€" paign of Lou Rocea, recently elected to carry the Liberal torch for the riding. He said Rocea and other Liberal candidates should tell voters, "‘There‘s no doubt Ontario‘s economy is teetering on the edge because of the NDP." In an interview before his speech, Phillips said Rocea would focus on creâ€" P Gerry Phillips L HOURS % 125 CROSS AVENUE, ACROSS FROM THE GO STATION ating a climate where business can grow, especially in this riding. "Oakville is a community that‘s heavily business oriented," he explained. "What Lou brings is an understanding of what it‘s going to take to get the economy rolling." He later told supporters the economy is clearly suffering. "On the fiscal side, the last four years have been a signifiâ€" cant problem," he said, during his 25â€" minute speech. "The average family in Ontario, each month, spends $300 just to pay the interest on the provincial debt." Phillips said the accumulated debt was caused by four straight years of a deficit, well over $10â€"billion as orchesâ€" trated by the NDP. He added, their fiscal performance came despite a provincial surplus, yielded by the Liberals just before Rae took office. Phillips explained the NDP refused to put the word "restraint‘ into their budget. "They were the only government in the western world that thought they could spend their way out of the recesâ€" sion," he said. Phillips added, the NDP tenure has resulted in 100,000 fewer people working in Ontario, compared to five years ago. He said that statistic is terrible, especially when there are 240,000 more people working everyâ€" where else in Canada. "Ontario can clearly be the economic leaders of North America. That is our vision," he stated. Phillips outlined a fiveâ€"point plan the Liberals believe will get the provincial economy rolling again, including emphasis on bringing business to Ontario, and focusing on education, and skills development of the future workforce. "‘There is, no doubt, we have signifiâ€" cant problems in Ontario," he said. ‘"‘The solutions are not going to be easy... Restraint will be the order of the day. e «.â€"â€"r},_.fi_.iu,fi.â€"* f * "yong" by the chimney Y M â€" with care...
