Travel with Cruise Holida Pamper yourself with a Tall Ship cruise l> ast week, I started telling you about our sevenâ€"day cruise on one of the ‘Tall Ships‘, the "Wind Star". Sailing from Barbados, we visâ€" ited five ports including St. Martin. The other four â€" Bequia, Iles des Saintes, St. Barts, and St. Kitts are not usually visited by the larger ships. Life onâ€"board the "Wind Star" is very different than the large cruise ships with 1,200 or more guests. As we were in port for five of our six days out of Barbados, the mornings were taken up with a shore visit, either independently or on one of the organized shore excursions offered by the ship. For a few of us, including yours truly, we went diving! A reef dive, two drift dives, and a wreck dive â€" it doesn‘t get much better for divers! Heather and some new friends went ashore and discovered that the small islands are small, ‘ti‘r‘iendly, pfetty, and unspoiled by large tourism. Shopping was limited, and shore visits usually concluded by noon, as the ‘local siesta‘ practice was to close up shop between noon and midâ€"afternoon (seems very civilized). The "Wind Star" did not dock at any of our port visits. An effiâ€" cient tender service was run conâ€" tinuously from ship to shore and return throughout our port visits. In the afternoon, activities priâ€" marily shifted back to the ship. The large expanse of teak decks attracted the sun worshippers; the pool and pool bar always seemed occupied; and the warm Caribbean breeze was lovely. Sponsored by Cruise Holidays ] Friendships were made easily. Some of us were back in the water â€" snorkeling, swimming off the sports platform (which drops down from the rear of the ship), enjoying sailing, ocean kayaking, and banana boat rides. On our visit to St. Kitts, the ship moved down the coast from the capital to a private beach area. The water sports program and a great BBQ lunch shifted to the beach for a great beach party! Preâ€"dinner cocktails and hors d‘oeuvres were served in the lounge and were accompanied by the sweet dancing music of our very talented trio of musicians. A pianist spelled the trio and both were prominent on the verandah deck during the afternoon and for light postâ€"dinner entertainment. The large shows were not missed on this ship. * Dinners were an extended affair and many retired to their cabins after a ‘walk around the deck‘. Howard Johnson Hotel has room at the inn for families visiting needy hospital patients or the fourth straight year, Fthe Howard Johnson Plazaâ€" Hotel is working with the Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital to assist families of patients during the holidays.
