These tokens will be handed out during the festive season R.I.D.E. program. "The success of any R.I.D.E. proâ€" gram starts with a buyâ€"in from the motoring public," said superintendent Ron Baranoski, commander of the Burlington district headquarters. "With commitment from sponsors such as the Hamilton Automobile Club and with drivers who are willing to think of other alternatives to drinking and driving, we feel that this will be a safe holiday seaâ€" son." According to OPP Sgt. John Mason, Burlington detachment officers stopped stopped 637 vehicles during the first weekend of the program. They levelled four 12â€"hour suspensions and one impaired charge. According to Sr. Constable Andy Bishop of the OPP‘s Traffic and Marine Branch, a total of 79,563 vehicles across the province were stopped from Nov. 27th to Dec. 3rd. As a result, 418 12â€"hour suspensions were issued and 144 criminal code alcoholâ€"related charges were laid. From Dec. 1st to 5th, Halton Regional Police checkpoints stopped a total of 2,030 vehicles. Sixteen roadside o ~ tests were administered while five 12â€" hour suspensions and the four impaired/over 80 mgs charges were laid. In 1993 15,773 vehicles across the region were checked, resulting in 26 impaired driving offences (up from 17 in 1992) and 47 12â€"hour suspensions. In 1991 police charged only six drivers.
