An international hockey tournament is wrapping up in Oakville with the semiâ€"final games on tap at various Oakville arenas on Thursday and the championship matches on tap on Friday at Glen Abbey Arena. Championship play starts at 8 a.m. and goes right through to the final game which gets under way at 7 p.m. The only thing minor about the fourâ€"day tournament is the age classifications which include minor novice, minor atom, minor peewee and minor bantam. Otherwise it is a huge tournament with 49 teams, including some from out of country and the calibre is also excellent with tripleâ€"AAA and doubleâ€"AA divisions. In this photo, goaltender Mitch MacKenzie, of the Oakville minor bantam doubleâ€"AA Rangers, was kept pretty busy as his team went on to lose a preliminary pool game 6â€"2 to Burlington. The other Oakville player in the picture is (#88) Matthew Turner. + (Photo by Pete Thompson) ecember 29, 1994 Coltec Industries \/A/ C C hor An Amerlccm Italian Eatery m P Oakville Place First A Fri The Town of Oakville 1166 South Service Road West Oakville, Ontario L6L 5T7 847â€"1166 550 KERR ST. 844â€"5732 1011 Upper Middle Rd. While many people were searching for open stores on Monday, Paul Foley, Peter Freill and friends were heading out on to the links at Oakville‘s Richview Golf Club to participate in their first annual winter Boxing Day tournament. The tournament came about when the two Oakville residents, who both work in the financial services industry, put two good ideas together. Freill for years had participated in a Boxing Day tournament in Burlington but it had been moved up to early December this year. He was interested in maintaining the tradition and better yet, he thought, why not do it for charity. Enter Paul Foley. For years he had volunteered with the Good Shepherd Centres in Hamilton and that‘s the charity that was chosen. The response was overwhelming. They hoped for 72 golfers, which they easily surpassed. In fact, they had to turn away about 60 people. Local merchants coughed up prizes for everyone and the Abbey Arms Pub came through with a great deal for some great food afterwards. "It went fabulous â€" we played all 18 holes," said Foley. "The weather was incredible." It went so well that the group can‘t wait until next year â€" literally. "We‘re going to organize a hockey game â€" we‘ll be in touch," said Foley. In Toronto, the Little Brothers of the Good Shepherd run Barrett House, Canada‘s first residence for people living with AIDS, and the Good Shepherd Refuge which in addition to providing emergency shelter for men provides both men and women with daily hot meals, a clothing room, dropâ€" in centre and a medical clinic. In Hamilton, the Good Shepherd Centre consists of four facilities, which on an average day serve between 400 and 450 men, women and children. Both centres also serve up a special Christmas dinner. 4 A JANUARY SAIL Oakville Power and Sail Squadron will be giving their popular spring boatâ€" ing courses again, starting the first week of January.
