The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 3, 2006 - 15 August wedding bells Continued from page 1 "We spent the entire night and next morning talking, and found we were still interested in learning more about each other a good sign," says Catley. They learned that they lived within minutes of each other, and decided to get together after the relay was over. Their romance blossomed quickly. Within three months, Dowling knew he was ready to pop the question, and after another three months, over a romantic birthday dinner, he proposed. But, neither forgets how they met. Both of their lives have been affected by cancer. Dowling's father passed away from the disease and Catley has had several family members who have battled cancer. However, to them, the fact that they met while participating in a fun event that raises both funds and awareness for cancer puts a positive spin on things. "While we obviously recognized how terrible cancer is, we're heartened by the fact that our willingness to give our time and effort to this event is the reason we came together," says Dowling. "It is good to know that something as wonderful as our relationship could have resulted from something like this; cancer is such a dark and devastating disease, so it is remarkable that something good could have come from it." This year the couple will be on the sidelines cheering on the Wildwood Academy team. They are taking the time they would have dedicated to this event to instead plan their upcoming August wedding. So what advice do they have for others? "Don't go there looking for a relay romance," says Dowling, who said he was drawn to his fiancée because she was just being herself. "Have your mind on the greater cause so your mind is sufficiently distracted and you never know what will happen." This year the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit's Relay for Life takes place June 2-3, 2006 at Appleby College.
