Last June, Bill Dowling and Tanya Catley met at Appleby College, the site of the Canadian Cancer Society Oakville Unit's Relay for Life, a 12 hour relay event where teams of 10-12 people take turns walking or running a lap of a track in order to raise funds for cancer. Specifically, it wants $306 million over two years to fund just 20 more minutes of daily care for residents. "An additional 20 minutes of daily care is not much, but it is a little more care, respect and dignity that our loved ones would experience with things like more help to get up or to enjoy their meal," said Michelle Fleming, Resident Services Coordinator at West Oak Village Long Term Care Centre. "The seniors in long term care are those who played a major role in shaping our country. They deserve this." And, socialize is exactly what Dowling and Catley did. Both were on the Wildwood Academy Team. Catley, a teacher at the Oakville School and Dowling, a freelance cameraman, who played ultimate Frisbee with one of Tanya's colleagues met that evening and ended up chatting while they spent some time off the track. After discussing various topics of mutual interest they realized that they had a lot in common.
