The Canadian Junior Squash Championship has turned into one big tease for Neha Kumar. Despite winning Canadian junior titles at four previous age levels -- most recently the Under-17 two years ago -- the national junior crown has always found a way to elude her. Last year Kumar came within one point of winning the championship before Stephanie Edmison rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win in five games. This year Kumar, the tournament's number one seed, again reached the final after sweeping her first three matches, only to be denied the championship by Laura Gemmell of Willowdale, who won Saturday's final 3-0. To make matters worse, Squash Canada's Web site initially posted Kumar as the winner. So the 18-year-old Abbey Park student had to break the bad news to those who called to congratulate her on a victory. "It's a little disappointing, especially because I was the first seed both years," Kumar said. She won't have much time to dwell on the result, though. Kumar is set to begin competing in the senior nationals today (Wednesday) in Toronto. A first-round win would match her up against the tournament's top seed Runa Reta. "It's a pretty tough draw but it will be good practice," she said. "I'll have to pick up the pace and you can always learn from your opponents and these are some of the top players." The pace is what Kumar believes cost her a chance at winning the junior nationals.
