34 - The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 3, 2006 Blakelock victorious in Halton baseball semifinal rematch By Matt Civak SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER In a rematch of last year's Halton high school baseball semifinals, the T.A. Blakelock Tigers were again victorious over White Oaks, but this time wasn't as easy. As opposed to last year's 10-0 romp, the Tigers had to erase an early 3-0 deficit Monday and shut down the Wildcats offence for a 7-3 victory. "(We got off to) a bit of a slow start," Blakelock coach Cam Evans said. "Our bats haven't come to life until later on in the game... I'd like to see that change around." The Tigers' starting pitcher, Clark Shipway, got hit hard early by the Wildcats, who scored three runs in the first inning. But Shipway settled in after that and tossed two scoreless innings before handing it over to Yianni Eracles, who pitched four shutout innings to preserve the win. Matt Kirk was handed an early lead by his teammates but couldn't hold it, allowing five runs in the first two innings. Zach Dixon went 2-4 with two RBI on a triple and a single to spark the Tigers offence. Blakelock used the stolen base to its advantage in the first two innings, running at will against White Oaks. "We felt we started the wrong guy at catcher," Wildcats assistant coach Doug Adams said. "We should have maybe started with another player at catcher that had a little more pop out of the throw and they took advantage of that in the first couple of innings." Both teams are looking to enjoy the same success they had last year. Henry Duke, the Wildcats' head coach, is confident that his team will be a competitor. "We'll be playing when it counts," he said. "The regular season means nothing here... the playoffs are all that matter. And we'll be playing when it matters." "We'd be happy if we do as well as we did last year," Adams said, despite the large turnover his team has seen with 13 new players out of 14. "We have some strong pitching and a good infield. So hopefully we can repeat that." Blakelock has a similar lineup to last year's Halton finalist team. "(We have) more young players this year, but very capable players," said Evans. "They can keep up to last year's team... no problem at all." Both teams resume action today as White Oaks takes on Iroquois Ridge and Blakelock matches up against Bishop Reding. In other action Monday, Loyola downed St. Thomas Aquinas 7-5, Milton Distict defeated Iroquois Ridge 7-3 and Abbey Park topped Robert Bateman 8-5. Call for a free mortgage consultation.
