The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 3, 2006 - 5 Culture shock Public board celebrates student excellence Thursday Achievement, involvement and hard work are the hallmarks of the nearly 100 students being given an award by the Halton District School Board. Students representing each of the board's elementary and secondary schools will be honoured at the 22nd annual Celebration of Student Excellence to be held tomorrow (Thursday) at 7:30 p.m. at Abbey Park High School, in Oakville. Ninety students will be feted during the evening's festivities. They are being recognized for demonstrating exceptional qualities in at least two of the following areas: academic, vocational and athletic fields, selfimprovement, community work, citizenship and student leadership, or specific criteria that reflects their school's unique priorities. More than 500 parents, principals, trustees, teachers and school administrators are expected to take part in the event. "Our Student Excellence evening recognizes the outstanding achievements of the young people in our schools today," said Paul Tate, chair of the Halton District School Board. "Parents, teachers, and community members all contribute to helping these students achieve in various endeavors. We welcome this opportunity to acknowledge their successes." Continued from page 3 the Canadian lifestyle, but they are quite content with it. Their style of living is just different, and at first it's hard to get used to, such as defecating in public, right in front of you. To them it's nothing. There are a few things that are really hard to get used to they tend to stare, which is a little bit creepy and in Canadian culture is considered rude. To them it means nothing. Also, they have no entertainment or schedule, so when we roll into a village or town, the whole populous shows up to see what's going on. We call it the "Canada Show" their form of TV and entertainment. Q: Are you scared? A: This is a hard question. I guess we are not scared, we are taught to do our job under extreme amounts of stress, time discipline, while at the same time being surgical with our operations, and having a high level of professionalism, so I wouldn't say scared. There are many situations that I have encountered that have made me uneasy, but everything goes back to training and drills...your reaction to a situation that would seem not normal to someone outside of the military is a simple task. It's afterwards when you have time to think about it, you're like, `Wow, did that just happen.'? Charlie Long finished his responses with this message: I just want everyone to know that we are safe, and that we look forward to our return home. We would also like to thank all those who support us. (People) may not like where the government is headed, but there are some really amazing and talented people who deserve the respect of the national community.
