The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 5, 2006 - 23 For the kids BBQ-for-Bricks helped build 45 homes for tsunami victims Approximately one year after kicking off Oakville's largest tsunami relief effort, Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn and Mayor Ann Mulvale will salute the community at a wrap-up barbeque celebration at Mixed Grill Restaurant, 2319 Lakeshore Rd W., on Saturday from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Throughout last summer and fall, funds were raised through backyard barbeques, corporate employee picnics and a number of different events under the banner "BBQfor-Bricks". Guests and participants were asked to make a small donation in support of tsunami relief, knowing that all funds raised were being spent to rebuild houses. In total, $45,000 was raised, enough to fund 45 "core" houses to be built by Habitat for Humanity. David Hughes, President of Habitat for Humanity Canada applauded Oakville's BBQ-for-Bricks campaign spearheaded by Flynn and Mulvale. "This is a demonstration of what Habitat for Humanity is all about, neighbours helping neighbours to create a better community. By giving from your heart to assist in our long term reconstruction of homes for our international neighbours, you recognize that our community is not just in our backyard, but also around the world." SPECIAL GUESTS: These four Kids -- Whitney OpokuWare, Kyrene Loxley Saude, Bernesia Sutherland and Rhagavy Rakulan -- were special guests at last week's All That Jazz Kidsfest gala dinner featuring Jeff Healey and Pinball Clemons. Sutherland was wearing the hat of a visiting RCMP officer, who acts as a mentor to Kidsfest clients. The four kids hail from Toronto and are currently enrolled in a Kidsfest marathon training program. The evening featured music and a live auction including a pair of grand pianos, an acoustic guitar, Rolex watches and cars.
