On top of getting a chance to see completed art, the show also featured students putting on live demonstrations of different kinds of art, including clay sculptures, making butterflies out of initials and screen painting. Grade 4 Oakwood student Madison Wharton spent a few hours Tuesday showing other students how to screen paint. "It's actually pretty fun doing this, and you don't have to do work," she said, smiling, as she brushed a paint-covered toothbrush against a screen to cre- ate one of several paintings she made during the day. "I like painting and I like the different colours and I like to make pictures." On top of painting, the 10-year-old was fielding a lot of questions from students about how to screen paint. "Some people asked me how to make the screen or how to paint it or if they could do it at home," she said Wharton. "So I told them, it's easy and fun to do and you can make it at home." Though the live demonstrations stopped at 2:30 p.m., the show was also open at night for parents and other guests. closes season with Beethoven The Oakville Chamber Orchestra (OCO) is concluding its 22nd season May 6-7 featuring Beethoven's 3rd Symphony and guest pianist, Elissa Miller-Kay. "It's been a great and varied season of music," said OCO music director and maestro, Stephane Potvin. "The last concert of the season promises to deliver the same high calibre of music people have come to expect from our group, showcased in two of the most beloved Beethoven pieces." The OCO is a volunteer group of area musicians, made up of a core group of string players with the addition of wind, brass and percussion musicians as required. The group performs the music repertoire of masters from all periods in the smaller and more intimate chamber setting of local churches. The full orchestra will be present for the May concerts, which also feature the talents of guest soloist pianist, MillerKay. She started studying piano at the age of five and was a scholarship student at the Young Artist Performance Academy at the Royal Conservatory of Music. She was then accepted on scholarship by the Glenn Gould Professional School and is now in the process of completing a four year Honours Bachelor of Music at the Royal Conservatory of Music. Next year, Miller-Kay will pursue a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at the Mannes School of Music in New York. She has won many awards and scholarships in the York Region Music Festival, the Davenport Music Festival, the Toronto Music Festival and the Kiwanis Festival. Most recently, she was awarded first prize in the Ben Steinberg Musical Legacy Competition. It's an annual scholarship awarded to an outstanding young Canadian musician. The Oakville Chamber Orchestra's performances are Saturday, May 6 at 7:30 p.m. at the Central Baptist Church, 340 Rebecca St., and Sunday, May 7 at 2 p.m. at St. Simon's Anglican Church, 1450 Litchfield Rd. Each performance will start with a musical chat presented by the Maestro.
