Blue Stars shine on world stage By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF A pair of Oakville Blue Stars got the chance to shine on the international stage, and they delivered. William Hyde and Alex Semenets scored in Canada's final game, a 2-1 win over Switzerland, at the Ballymena International Soccer Tournament in Northern Ireland. The victory gave the Canadian men's Under-17 team a 2-2 record in the tournament and secured a fifth-place finish in the eight-team tournament. Hyde, a left fullback, helped Canada win the Caribbean Youth Cup last summer in Trinidad. Though the Blue Stars play at a high level -- they won the national U14 championship two years ago and the Ontario Cup last year -- Hyde said playing internationally requires elevating his game. "Everything is so much faster," he said. "It's all quality, there are no mistakes." Semenets, who was making his debut for the national team, agreed. "It's a lot more tactical," he said. "A club team, you might have one or two star players that they depend on. At this William Hyde level it's more of a team game. Everyone is equal. There's no room to take anyone lightly, regardless of their national ranking." Canada opened the tournament with a 1-0 win over Scotland but lost its next two, 4-0 to the Czech Republic and 1-0 to Belguim. Matched up against Switzerland to play for the Larne Shield, the Blue Stars duo stepped up. Twenty minutes in, Canada was awarded a free kick. Oliver Lacoste-Lebuis rolled the ball forward and Semenets drilled a shot under the crossbar to give Canada the lead. Switzerland would tie the game late in the opening half but the Blue Stars would team up to provide the winner. In the 69th minute, Semenets broke free and his cross to the far post found Hyde, who put it home for the winning goal. "It's really good to know the way the Alex Semenets other plays," Semenets said of suiting up for Canada with his Oakville teammate. "We had some set plays to break around the defence." Semenets became the fifth player from the Blue Stars squad to play for the national team. He didn't start the exhibition game prior to the tournament but did start all four tournament contests and both players hope they left a good impression to earn them a spot on future Canadian teams. The Blue Stars' national U14 title helped the two get noticed by national coaches and defending the title at the U16 level certainly wouldn't hurt. That's where both players will be focusing their attention in the coming months. Hyde has been playing for the Blue Stars and coach Phil Iafrati for seven years and Semenets joined the team a year later.
