"I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and thanks to research funded by the Canadian Cancer Society, and better treatment, I'm still here," said Gay. "I'm pleased to have been chosen and it's a privilege for my family and our company to give back to the community," said Gay. The number of survivors who participate in the Relay has climbed from 80 in 2002 to 186 last year. In its first year, the Oakville Relay for Life raised $262,000. Last year it raised $601,000. Oakville's Relay for Life is second in Ontario and fourth across Canada for fundraising. The event is extremely successful given Oakville's population and the event manages to reduce its expenses each year from $50,200 or 19 per cent of its total the first year to $41,863 or just under seven per cent last year. Over the past four years, Relay for Life has raised $1,761,786 in Oakville and will cross the $2 million mark this year. The event has grown from participation by 97 teams in 2002 to 186 last year. This year's goal is to have 210 teams. Teams are invited to camp overnight at Appleby as participants walk throughout the night along a track lit by thousands of luminaries. It's a community spirit event that appeals to all ages. People dress up in costume and decorate their tent sites...all in the name of celebrating people -- lighting luminaries for lost loved ones, survivors and those battling cancer. Team registration is encouraged online at www.cancer.ca and teams are encouraged to create Web pages to solicit donations. According to Gibb, fear of cancer or the big "C" has been turned into hope for a cure so that cancer can increasingly become a disease treated like any other disease. It's a disease the Longo family is all too familiar with -- however their commitment to support of the relay is as constant and tenacious as their commitment to the family business. Longo Brothers Fruit Markets Inc. is a family-owned business started by Anthony's dad Tommy, and Tommy's brothers Joe and Gus Longo in 1956. Their first store was on Yonge Street and Castlefield in Toronto and it was less than 2,000 square feet and employed eight family members. In 1962, the Longo brothers opened their second store on Woodbine Avenue and 14 stores have popped up since. The Oakville store opened in 1982. The Longo family remains involved in all aspects of the business and to this day, family members carry on the founders' tradition of going to Ontario Food Terminal six days a week at 6 a.m. to purchase the produce for the stores. The first store was opened with the philosophy of providing customers with the best fresh food experience possible. Forty-five years and 14 stores later, the philosophy remains the heart and soul of the family owned and operated company. The company also believes in extending its commitment to people beyond their stores and into the community. With a belief in family values being essential to community growth, Longo's Corporate "Community Caring Program" focuses on supporting charities and organizations designed to help children become healthy, productive, independent adults; women's health and welfare; Breakfast Clubs in elementary schools and house league sports teams.
