Blakelock's Dan Welsh puts everything into his heave in the senior boys' shot put Monday at the Halton/GHAC track and field meet in Burlington. Welsh's toss of 12.42m earned him a silver medal and a trip to next week's regionals. Golden World Cup opener for van Koeverden Adam van Koeverden won the season-opening World Cup kayak race in Poznan, Poland on Saturday and narrowly missed a second gold and a world record on Sunday. Van Koeverden earned his sixth career World Cup victory by taking the K-1 500m event in a time of one minute 40.986 seconds. Germany's Lutz Altepost was second in 1:41.160. Sunday, van Koeverden eclipsed the world-record time in the 1000m only to be edged by less than a tenth of a second by New Zealand's Ben Fouhy. Fouhy, the 2003 world champion, won the gold in a time of 3:24.495 while van Koeverden took the silver medal in 3:24.591. The previous record, set two years ago by Norway's Eirik Veraas Larsen, was 3:24.920. Van Koeverden's two medals were among the seven won by Canada at the two-day event. Burloak Canoe Club teammate Mark Oldershaw was the top Canadian finisher in the C-1 500m, placing sixth. He finished eighth in the 1000m. David Ferreira turned a disappointment into a gold-medal performance. Cut from the St. Thomas Aquinas soccer team, Ferreira decided to try his hand at shot put and joined the Raiders' track and field team. His second choice didn't turn out too badly. Ferreira won the junior boys' shot put with a toss of 12.82m Monday at the first of two days at the Halton/Golden Horseshoe track and field championship in Burlington. "I did shot put in elementary school and didn't do too bad," Ferreira said. "I usually finished second or third so I thought I'd give it a try." Ferreira's winning throw gave him a comfortable half metre victory over Burlington Central's Cooper Warrington. Paul Giddings of Iroquois Ridge was third at 11.97m. The 6-foot, 210-pound Ferreira had actually been practising with the heavier senior shot and was surprised to arrive at the GHAC meet to see that he would be competing with the lighter shot. The Grade 10 student's victory earns him a spot in next week's South Region qualifier in St. Catharines. "There are going to be a lot of bigger guys coming up so I'm going to have to work a lot harder," Ferreira said of moving on to the last step before the provincial finals. Although the Grade 10 student was competing in the shot put for the first time in high school, the win was a pleasant surprise, although not completely unexpected. "We looked at the size of him and we knew he definitely had potential," said Aquinas coach Cindy Miller.
