The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 17, 2006 - 41 Buzz rolls on, improves to 7-0 By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF It was the first real test of the season for the Oakville Buzz and they aced it. The Buzz turned in a dominant effort Sunday in a 12-3 win over the Akwesasne Lightning. Coupled with Friday's 17-7 victory over the Halton Hills Bulldogs, the Buzz improved its Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B record to 7-0. "It has a very nice ring to it," Buzz coach Glen Little said of the undefeated record. Oakville limited Akwesasne to just 35 shots and netminder Gary Muzzin turned aside 32 of them. Although Akwesasne may not be the same powerful squad Oakville knocked off in last year's East Conference final, the Lightning still came into the game sporting a 6-1 record. "They played unbelievable," Little said of his players' effort Sunday . "It was a very controlled, very team-oriented game. They played very strong defence and Gary (Muzzin) played his best 60 minutes of the year." The Buzz did some advance scouting on the Lightning, watching their Saturday tilt with Mimico. From that outing they learned the importance of shutting down Akwesasne's fast break. Oakville effectively controlled the key to the Lightning's fast-paced offence, sniper Peter Jacobs, who had scored 20 of Akwesasne's 64 goals heading into the weekend. While Little was excited about his team's play on the floor, he was even more impressed with the team's attitude off the floor. Two players approached him following the win and told the coach not to let up in practice and to continue to push the team. "They are very determined. They're doing it themselves," he said. "They're kids but it's a very mature group." It looked like Halton Hills would provide a tougher game for the Buzz but with the Bulldogs missing six players due to suspensions stemming from a brawl in Cornwall, they proved to be easy pickings. The Buzz built a 6-2 first-period lead and never looked back, putting the game away with five goals in the final five minutes. Josh Smyth and Brenden Thenhaus had huge offensive games, each scoring five times. Smyth added five assists while Thenhaus had four. Sean Thomson recorded his first of two back-to-back hat tricks. Chris Moulson also scored twice while Alex Crepinsek and Chris Corbeil added singles. Reed Board and Muzzin each had two assists. Smyth and Thompson each had three goals against Akwesasne while Board and Brian Rea each had a pair. Moulson had a goal and three assists and Thenhaus scored once and set up two more.
