The West Oak School Band will be marching to a new beat this month. At the recent Ontario Band Association Music Festival, the band earned a silver rating. The band's music teacher, Shannon Jones, has a reputation for being as dedicated to her students as a mother would be to her children. Jones has taught music for three years at West Oak. Jones feels blessed to teach such a triumphant and mature set of students, and to have been so successful with competitions. "They are truly a great group of students, they are all very committed, focused, hard working and disciplined. I've been fortunate to work with students who have such a positive attitude." There has been a lot of support for the school's band with the administrative staff and the parents. The parent council of the school provides funds for the music class, aiding with the costs of sheet music and instruments. From slow lyrical pieces, to atmospheric sounds and funky tunes, the band plays a variety of music for each competition and concert. With rehearsals from 7:30 - 8:40 a.m. every Tuesday and Thursday, the students truly justify the phrase, `practice makes perfect.' The Ontario Band Association Music Festival is not so much a competition as it is a concert.
