12 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday May 20, 2006 Oakville's Relay for Life grateful for sponsors' support By Kate Jones SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER The Cancer Society's Relay For Life celebrates its fifth consecutive year in Oakville, with outstanding support from its major event sponsors. "While we are delighted to have corporate sponsors that have partnered with us each year, we also welcome new sponsors," says Mary Ellen Frederick, the Oakville Unit Manager. Appleby College will host over 180 teams consisting of 10 members each in a colourful "tent village" June 2-3 where they will spend the night together, taking turns walking or running around the scenic track. Together with the numerous volunteers we depend on annually to run the Relay For Life event, we will have over 2,500 people on the site where we've met since its inception. "It is our largest event, and we couldn't do it without the major contributions from our corporate sponsors," adds Frederick. Scotiabank Group, our major Event Sponsor for five years running, is recognized as a leader internationally and among Canadian corporations for its charitable donations and philanthropic activities. In 2005 the bank provided more than $40 million in sponsorships and donations primarily in the areas of healthcare, education and social service. Locally, The Oakville Beaver has helped spread the word about this great cause for the full five years, generously providing inkind advertising as the Print Media Sponsor. For the second year, CTV Toronto is proud to act as the official Media Sponsor of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life in the Greater Toronto Area. CTV Toronto is home to Toronto's number one newscast, CTV News at Six. This year CTV has registered a team at our event as well teams at many of the other Relays across the GTA. AGF Funds, also for the second year, continues to be our proud Survivor Sponsor. Each year survivors officially open The Relay For Life event in an emotional walk around the track as their names are called out individually. This Victory Lap acknowledges and celebrates the courage of each survivor and helps inspire all of the participants. AGF is one of Canada's premier investment management companies serving more than one million investors in Canada and worldwide. Luminaries candles that have been placed in fire-retardant paper bags around the Relay track -- that bear the names of survivors or those who have lost their battle against the disease. Celebrating it's 50th year in business, Longo's has been committed to quality, excellence, and people as it has grown from one small fruit market on Yonge Street in Toronto to an award winning 14-store independent grocer, while remaining a family-run business. For the past five years the Site Host for the Relay for Life in Oakville has been Appleby College. Appleby College is an independent school for 679 young men and women in Grades 7 to 12. Founded in 1911, Appleby offers a university preparatory education to both boarding and day students. The curriculum offers extensive academics, arts, athletics and community service programs. The Canadian Cancer Society thanks its sponsors for their generous contributions. If your company would like to help celebrate the 5th anniversary of the Relay For Life, please consider donating funds, products or a service. You may also be a Metre Sponsor for $250 and have your company name on a sign that will be placed on the relay track. For more information see www.cancer.ca or call the Oakville Unit, 905-8455231.
