The Glen Abbey Golf Club was abuzz yesterday, as 46 community-minded golfers played 100 holes - from sunrise to sunset each with pledges of $3,000 or more, in support of the Community Foundation of Oakville. Last year, golfers braved a sweltering day on the fairways and raised more than $140,000 for the cause. This year the total raised was $212,783. Net proceeds of the event go toward the work of the CFO in linking generous people to special community causes. Golfers enjoyed breakfast, lunch and dinner as part of the marathon event. In addition, awards were given to those with the highest pledges of the tournament as well as the highest number of pledges. This year the winner of the Larry and Gerry Wilson Trophy for the highest pledges raised went to Aubrey Baillie who fundraised $25,000 for the cause. The Foundation thanks its golfers and sponsors in what was a memorable day of golf as well as a great way to give back to the community. Says Bruce Etherington, Chair, "This, our 8th Marathon of Golf for the CFO, illustrates the spirit of community and all that can be achieved in working together for the benefit of others." The Community Foundation of Oakville links community-minded citizens to charitable needs by managing permanent endowed funds and distributing income from those funds to local charities. Since 1997, grants of over $8 million have been made to benefit community organizations. In its 12 years of operation, the CFO's assets have grown to over $25 million, addressing needs in social services, health care, youth, the environment, arts and culture, education and community development.
