The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 24, 2006 - 9 Walk for Dog Guides fundraiser for Lions Foundation Local community members, dog lovers and many canine companions will gather at the Lions Foundation of Canada, 152 Wilson St., at 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 28 for the national Purina Walk for Dog Guides. Now in its 21st year, the walk attracts thousands of people and their dogs at 150 communities across Canada to raise donations in support of Lions Foundation of Canada Dog Guides a national organization that trains dog guides to assist Canadians with disabilities. "We look forward to this walk every year and it's really heartwarming to see support pour in from all over Canada," says Lion Surinder Sharma, organizer of the Oakville event. "Our goal is to raise money to help Canadians with physical disabilities achieve a more independent lifestyle and these walks are a major part of Lions Foundation of Canada's fundraising initiatives." Organization of the Purina Walk for Dog Guides is spearheaded by Lions Clubs and volunteers across Canada, including the Oakville Lions Club and Friends of Lions Foundation of Canada. Participation is open to everyone with or without a four-legged friend. To donate on-line, find local Walk information and to register, please visit www.purinawalkfordogguides.com. The Lions Foundation of Canada has been training Dog Guides to serve the needs of Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities since 1983. While the cost of placing and training a dog guide is approximately $20,000, each eligible candidate is provided a dog guide including all required training, travel and accommodation at no charge. To date, more than 1,200 Canadians from coast to coast ranging in age from eight to 84 have received a dog guide. Lions Foundation of Canada's three programs are Canine Vision Canada, Hearing Ear Dogs of Canada, and Special Skills Dogs of Canada. Lions Foundation of Canada does not receive any government funding, so it must rely solely on fundraising activities, corporate sponsorships and private donations to support the dog guide training programs. In addition to title sponsor of the Walk for Dog Guides, Purina also provides all the food for dog guides in-training. Since 1985, annual fundraising Walks in communities across Canada have collectively raised more than $5 million in support of Dog Guide training programs.
