Kalata, Raiders win volleyball gold White Oaks' Carrie Kalata helped the Waterdown Raiders under-16 girls' squad earn silver at the recent Eastern Canadian Volleyball Championships. Kalata, a two-time winner of the Ontario Volleyball Association's Award of Excellence at the provincial championships, provided the Raiders with strong back-court defence and timely service aces to help the Raiders reach the final of the 40-team tournament in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Raiders won eight straight matches without dropping a set before running into the Durham Attack Black in the Tier 1 championship. Durham had also not dropped a set heading into the championship game. The Attack took the opening set 25-10 but Waterdown rallied to even the match with a 2516 victory. The deciding set went down to the wire with the Attack pulling out a 15-12 win to claim the gold. Waterdown opened with three straight wins in pool play, downing the Sydney Stingers 25-13, 25-7, Moncton's Anges Bleus 25-9, 25-23 and Elite de Beauce 25-22, 25-22. The Raiders continued to cruise in the second round of pool play. They defeated Yarmouth Black Ice 25-21, 25-13, the Anges d'Or 25-12, 256 and Gauloises 25-21, 25-19. A quarter-final rematch with Elite de Beauce produced a similar result with the Raiders winning 25-18, 25-22. In the semifinals the Raiders topped Montreal's les Aigles 25-15, 25-20. The Raiders' GU-14 team won its final three games to capture the Tier 4 gold medal. Kate Croft of White Oaks Public School was a member of the Raider team. After going 1-2 in each of the two rounds of pool play, the Raiders defeated the Metro Lakers of Halifax 25-21, 25-8. Waterdown then defeated the River Valley Spikers 25-15, 25-12 in the semifinal before downing Yarmouth County's Eclipse 25-20, 25-13 in the Tier 4 final.
