Autism rally set for Sunday Parents of autistic children and their supporters will stage an Oakville rally this Sunday to protest what they call provincial government stalling over providing adequate educational support. At 11 a.m., the group will gather at the Holiday Inn Select (QEW and Bronte Road) for the tenth in a province-wide series of rallies. Organizers say these events protest the McGuinty government's failure to keep its written promise to end age cut-offs and provide autism therapy in schools. During the rally there will be speeches from several parents, petition signing, music and remarks from Burlington MPP Cam Jackson. It has been more than one year since an Ontario Superior Court ruled that cutting off services at age six for children with autism was discrimination under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Justice Frances Kiteley's ruling also recommended that the government provide Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) in schools. The Ontario government has appealed the decision, despite the fact that both these changes were promised in writing by Dalton McGuinty while campaigning before the last provincial election. Since then, waiting lists have continued to grow and families are left to risk bankruptcy to pay for ABA on their own. The cost of the intensive process, dubbed Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) by the Ontario government, ranges from $40,000 to $75,000 per year for each child, depending on the number of hours per week. The lifetime care costs for a person with autism who does not receive service are estimated to range from $8 million to $13 million. ABA is most effective if delivered early and parents are outraged that the government has "dithered" on the issue for another year, worsening the lifeprospects for children with autism. This series of rallies is organized by a group of five parents of children with autism from across Ontario. The rallies began in Orillia in June, 2005, and have also taken place in Whitby, Ottawa, Burlington, Richmond Hill, Sarnia and Toronto. More locations will be selected until the government acts to help all children with autism.
