The Oakville Beaver, Friday May 26, 2006 - 33 Opening Day STA, Loyola advance to soccer finals By Matt Civak SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER With a dominant 4-0 victory Wednesday over E.C. Drury, St. Thomas Aquinas' senior boys' soccer team earned its way back to the Halton high school AA championship game. Receiving two goals by Delroy Mavroleon and additional markers by Julian Fabiani and MacKenzie Wilde, the Raiders beat the Spartans to advance to today's Halton AA final against the Bishop Reding Royals (scheduled for 12:30 p.m. in Burlington). "We lost to these guys last year with the same result, so we knew it was going to be a tough game," E.C. Drury coach Justin Tasev said. "We just tried to stay to our strategy and stay with them until the very end and get a bounce to go our way, which we didn't." The Spartans were unable to mount much of an attack or even maintain possession of the ball for any extended period of time. "We played (steadily) and capitalized on their mistakes," Raiders coach Peter Szpakowski said of his teams performance. "Our (midfielders) are so strong and they managed to control the play and eventually get it up to the guys who can just put it away." Giovanni Cardillo picked up the shutout without really being tested by the Spartans offence. The play of the Raiders' defence and midfield made Cardillo's job easy. "I don't think that we were used to the speed that (Aquinas) had and the skill," Tasev said. "We weren't used to that and it kind of came and haunted us at the end. We couldn't create our chances, we couldn't break down their defence and we got very tired near the end." The Raiders will be looking to return to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) championship to improve on the silver medal that they won last year. "Last year we were really lowly ranked and managed to knock off a lot of teams," Szpakowski said. "This year, we won't have that benefit of surprising teams. Teams will be looking for us." However, Szpakowski is confident in his team's chances at OFSAA and expects big things from his team. "Definitely right there, challenging to medal, if not win it," Szpakowski said. "We got a silver medal last year, losing to Hamilton Christian, a very strong team. And we managed to beat them... for the Spectator Cup, which was a huge win for us confidence-wise going back into OFSAA." Hawks upset Eagles Meanwhile, at Abbey Park, the Loyola Hawks upset the previously undefeated Eagles 1-0 to advance to today's Halton AAA final. Abbey Park finished the regular season with a 2-0-2 mark, claiming first in the Central Division, but fell prey to the 2-1-1 Hawks. Details from that semifinal contest were unavailable. Loyola will face the Nelson Lords today at 3 p.m. in Burlington. Girls' soccer finals are also slated for today. Matchups in all three finals (AA, AAA and AAAA) were unknown at press time as the semifinals were played yesterday.
