A University of Waterloo Algae Research Project is seeking volunteer observers. Biology Department scientists from the University of Waterloo will be conducting extensive research in Lake Ontario off the Oakville and Burlington shoreline this summer. The object is to learn more about the proliferation of algae and determine possible means to mitigate the problem of smelly algae accumulation along the shoreline. While their team will be focusing on water sampling and monitoring vegetation growth in the lake, they are looking for volunteers to act as shoreline observers. Individuals who live on or near the lake or who walk along the lakeshore frequently would be ideal candidates. They will be asked to keep an eye out for and report algae accumulation on the beach areas and in near-shore waters. Volunteers will also be asked to report periodically on wind, water and general weather conditions.
