The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday May 31, 2006 - 7 MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Halton Regional Chair candidate says letter writer's criticism off base I want to get the facts straight about a recent letter to the editor by David Bazar. I want Mr. Bazar to know the reason that I am running for Regional Chair is because I have been approached by a number of people encouraging me to seek the position. I am even being stopped on the street by people I have never met before telling me to run for the position. Since I filed to run I have been out knocking on doors and have received very positive reactions. Many people remember my record of standing up for my constituents. They comment on how I stood with the people of Oakville and voted against the government when 82 per cent of Oakville residents voted against the provincial downloading bill on a municipal ballot. I also resent Mr. Bazar's allegations in his letter to the editor of being a part of a corrupt government. I was the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario when the sponsorship program occurred at the federal level. I was elected Speaker by members of all parties of the Legislature. The Speaker is responsible for the running of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario which is a $110 million dollar operation. I recently turned down jobs to coach hockey in Australia and in Holland in order to run for Halton Regional Chair because I believe in our great community. Mr. Bazar is also wrong about the pension. You may remember the Ontario government eliminated the MPP's pensions and I am not receiving any pension from any government at any level. I also did not receive a severance of $140,000 from the federal government. I trust Mr. Bazar will do the honorable thing and publicly apologize for the errors in his letter to the editor. In his letter Mr. Bazar asks people to run for elected office, but it is because of the misinformation and personal attacks by people like Mr. Bazar that a lot of good people do not seek office. I put my name forward because I believe my background as an MPP, MP and Speaker of the House gives me the experience to serve our great community.
