The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 2, 2006 - 11 Beaver wins again Bronte Legion celebrates D-Day The Oakville Beaver has won two national community newspaper awards. At the Canadian Community Newspaper Association's (CCNA) 87th national convention in Quebec City last weekend, The Beaver won awards for the Best Environmental Writing and Best Newspaper Promotion categories. The Oakville Beaver's community editor Wilma Blokhuis won the environmental award for her feature series, Happy Trails. The Best Wilma Blokhuis Newspaper Promotion Award was won by The Oakville Beaver's Partner in Success section celebrating the newspaper's 43 years in the community. The same section won the OCNA's In House Promotion Award earlier this year. "I am very proud to get national recognition once again for The Oakville Beaver. It is nice that both the editorial and advertising departments won first place awards based on their creativity and quality of work," said Publisher Ian Oliver who heads up the Halton Media Division and is vice president of parent company, Metroland Printing, Publishing and Distributing, a division of Torstar. The Happy Trails series featured firstperson accounts of hiking trails in Oakville's trails system. An avid hiker, Blokhuis walked the trails in spring, summer, fall and winter to get a first-hand look at the natural beauty available to Oakville Beaver readers in their own community. The series earned her two second place awards in the Ontario Community Newspaper Association's (OCNA) Better Newspapers Competition -- for environmental writing and best sports and recreation story, and tied for thrid place in the Suburban Newspapers of America (SNA) for best environmental coverage. The Oakville Beaver also finished third in the Best Coverage of the Arts award. The Oakville Beaver is also one of 24 community newspapers in the top circultation class (25,000 and over) to receive a Blue Ribbon award for overall quality. The CCNA is the national voice of the Canadian community press, and represents more than 700 English-language community newspapers, with a combined circulation of more than 12 million copies per week.
