St. Mildred's-Lightbourn School student Jessica Adams is only in Grade 11, but she's already exerting a powerfully positive influence far beyond her peer group. The 16-year old recently won a Family Channel anti-bullying public service announcement (PSA) contest by combining technology and imagination to create an entry that plainly struck a chord with the judges. Better still, her work recently aired on Family Channel, spreading the message of respect to an even wider audience. Adams' entry actually began as a school-only project, a short digital video trailer on bullying featuring the Grade 5 friends of her little sister. It focused on a girl who had the power to stop time, who uses this gift to help another student. Then Communication Technology and Visual Art teacher Otino Corsano suggested she expand the scope of her efforts and submit an entry to Family Channel. For her new idea, Adams incorporated the old footage into her theme of "labeling," which she believes is a major contributor to bullying. She then exported this material from iMovie to Photoshop where she customized each individual frame with text labels hovering over the characters' heads - then back again. (In the PSA, the labels disappear when bullying is overcome.) Corsano described it as still animation using live-action footage. "I was really impressed by the project," he said. "It's really with the Y Pho Photo Contest Did you grow up in Oakville? Can you think way, way back to the 50's, 60's, and 70's...from poodle skirts to disco and from the `Y-Nots' to `Kinder Kamp'? We want to celebrate the history of the Y and of our community, and your old photos can take us back in time like nothing else can. So dig through those albums and shoe boxes and join in the fun!
