And while the new provincial legislation will boot puffers out of the last few remaining indoor bastions of public smoking, no one is predicting a major outcry. Gene Costello, club manager for Delta Mayfair Bingo on Speers Rd., expects his clients will take a few months to get used to the notion that they can't puff while they dab. Since Oakville passed a tough anti-smoking bylaw in 2002, bingo and Legion halls have been among the only indoor places smokers could light up. At the Delta Mayfair, half the floor space is reserved for nonsmokers, while smokers play in an enclosed smoking room. Although the floor space is divided up equally, Costello guesses that about 65 per cent of his clients are smokers. He expects complaints, and potentially, a 10 to 15 per cent drop in attendance in the coming months. But the bingo manager expects his clients will come to accept the change. The Yeilding family thanks the EMS workers who helped out when Jack had epileptic seizures. Thanks to emergency services By Howard Mozel OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF See New page 9 Oakville's Yeilding family has so many reasons to praise local fire, paramedic and police personnel, but only two heartfelt words with which to convey their gratitude: thank you! "It's a big thank you for treating the whole family," said Jodi Yeilding, explaining how emergency workers have not only cared for her epileptic son Jack on numerous occasions but also supported his anxious parents as well. "That's truly where they went above and beyond. That's what stands out." After all, explained Jodi, seeing your child unconscious or convulsing is a nightmare come true so the compassion shown to Jack's loved ones in addition to the skill in treating him -- has left a painfully life-affirming mark. "We are very fortunate to live in a community that takes such control," she said. Last June, when her husband David was out of town and she was preparing to go to work, Jodi discovered Jack, then two and a half, unconscious in his high chair. With no clue about what was happening, she called 911 and within minutes fire, police and EMS personnel were in the house ministering to her son. "EMS people are so great," said Jodi, appreciative they took her under their wing as well. Two months later, in August 2005, Jodi was leaving her parents' home when she found Jack unconscious in his car seat. Again she called 911 and again the emergency workers were "phenomenal." "After that, Jack was diagnosed with epilepsy," she said. "He started taking medication and we hoped for the best." As if that wasn't enough, Jodi was now pregnant and four days before her C-section, Jack seizured again and again 10 See Family page 3 End insurance confusion.
