Artscene Oakville Beaver · FRIDAY, JUNE 2, 2006 By Catherine O'Hara SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER 33 Story of intrigue and manipulation Drawing her inspiration from water and sky, novelist Rachael Preston, in affiliation with Goose Lane Editions, publishes her second novel The Wind Seller. A part-time cre"Sometimes you ative writing don't know what teacher at Sheridan College Institute of exactly moves Technology and you, but it Advanced Learning provokes an and at Mohawk emotion." College, Preston dedicated her Rachael Preston, mornings to writauthor ing her second novel. Set in the early 1900s in Nova Scotia, a schooner, rum pirate ship is visible in the distance and its arrival on shore troubles occupants of Great Village, particularly the ones of Matheson and Douglas. While exploring the complex struggle of freedom against the backdrop of passion and regression, Preston tells the story of Noble Matheson and Hetty Douglas who fall prey to a female pirate's manipulations. Inspired by a camping trip in the Maritimes, as well as her husband Ian's abiding interest in history and love of collectibles, Preston found herself in an antique shop in Prince Edward Island. "The sales clerk revealed the lid of a box of books completed with a mailing list to a Noble Matheson in Great Village, Nova Scotia," said Preston. Intrigued as to why Noble Matheson purchased these books, Preston felt a story-line coming her way. After extensive research and a stop in Great Village, Nova Scotia, Preston found herself enlivened to write the story that Noble Matheson may have wanted to write, having no idea what that story was, of course. RON KUZYK / OAKVILLE BEAVER SECOND NOVEL: Author Rachael Preston admires the copies of her new novel The Wind Seller on the bookstore shelf. Preston said she was able to visualize the ending of her first novel, Tent of Blue, but The Wind Seller was quite different. She wrote the novel without an outline "I just chased the story to the end," she said. Returning to Nova Scotia to help frame her story, Preston revealed that extensive research was done on Noble Matheson's life. "I owe it to the reader to get the facts right," she said affirmatively. While discussing her passion for writing, Preston explained that she can be indirectly inspired by what she reads. "Sometimes you don't know what exactly moves you, but it provokes an emotion," she said after listing her favourite Canadian authors. Preston admits her husband is very good at helping her and seeing her story take its shape. She also attends a writers group, where she shares a scene or a chapter of her work with other writers, who inturn offer different tips and ideas to help build and mold her story. The Wind Seller is currently available at most bookstores.
