34 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 2, 2006 Glen Abbey branch set to re-open Oakville Public Library users living in the Glen Abbey community have patiently waited for their new library to re-open since it closed for construction in September 2005. The expansion to the library will include an extra 3,500 sq. ft. addition with a renovation to the existing space. The excitement is starting to build for the grand FABULOUS BUFFET DINNER & SHOW... IT'S A GREAT NIGHT OUT OPENING MAY 4 PLAYING JULY 13 - SEPT 17 Box Office 5400 Dixie Road, Mississauga 905-238-0042 or book online & ticket printing at www.stagewest.com re-opening celebration on June 17, 2006. The community will have its first chance to see inside the new branch during the re-opening celebration on June 17. As a way to welcome everyone back to the Glen Abbey library branch, from 10 a.m. 2 p.m. There will be a fun lineup of activities and events for the whole family to enjoy. The library will open at 10 a.m. and continuous activities will begin, the ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m., indulge in free hot dogs and pop at 12 p.m., and watch Children's entertainer, Craig Douglas perform in the new Children's area at 1 p.m. There will also be a scavenger hunt for children ages six to 12 and balloons for all children throughout the event. The staff of the Glen Abbey branch is equally excited about working in the fresh space, says Susan Kun, Manager of Special Projects and the Glen Abbey branch. As branch manager the · replacement parts · computer cables · ink & toner cartridges · new & refurbished computers · computer upgrades & service project has a lot of meaning to Kun. "I have been fortunate to have experienced the many phases of the project life cycle, which includes design, implementation and construction, installation, test and pre-open and soon the opening," she says. "Much collaborative work and effort has gone into this project not only from library staff but also from, architects, designers, visual merchandising professionals, artisans, and of course engineers, and construction staff." The attractive new library branch will be filled with many new features and benefits. Kun feels that the newly created Children's space, with its aubergine wall and natural lighting is one of the most unique features. "The new circulation desk with its glass tile and the new children's entrance are also visually stunning," she adds. The Glen Abbey branch will also offer wireless technology and new computers. "Our Circulation Desk is also quite innovative, the internal book drop has a unique mechanism which will move library materials from the front desk into the workroom," describes Kun. "All of the special features of the Glen Abbey branch are due, in large part, to much support from the community. I would like to extend my warm thanks to all of our donors and sponsors of the project who have generously supported this project," says Kun. "We know what this library means to you and our community. We collectively look forward to seeing you again and welcome you back to your library." Submitted by the Oakville Public Library Special folks work to Give Kids a Chance YMCA of Oakville members are a special group of people who, when called upon, will not only step up to the plate to assist children and families in our community -- but will do it with gusto. The YMCA of Oakville is a charity which, through its fee assistance program, provides access to all YMCA programs to those who are unable to pay the full program cost. This enables children, youth and families to participate in the full spectrum of YMCA including Y Child Care, Y Summer Camps, Y Sports and free drop-in programs through Y Steps and Stages in the early years. Participants feel a sense of belonging to the community and reach their true potential. Give Kids the Chance, the YMCA of Oakville's Annual Giving Campaign, provides a significant portion of the funding necessary to deliver these programs and services to disadvantaged children, youth and families and every year we meet our goals through the generous support of YMCA members and the Oakville community. In 2004, Give Kids the Chance raised just over $133,000 and in 2005 you helped us raise the bar to $152,000. It's important to know that 100 per cent of these funds were used to provide fee assistance and free programs. Our goal for Give Kids the Chance in 2006 is $160,000. Earlier this month Christa Keating, a YMCA volunteer and consultant for Volunteer Resources at Trillium Health Centre, took leadership of the Member-toMember campaign and was able to arrange for the generous donation of a Schwinn Unisex Bike, valued at over $400, as a draw prize for our donating members. With the help of volunteers like Christa, our members, and friends like you, an additional $6,000 was raised in the month of May. Thank you, Christa and thank you, Oakville. To date we have raised almost $40,000 for Give Kids the Chance. With the ongoing support of the community, the YMCA of Oakville will continue to build strong kids, strong families and strong communities.
