The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 2, 2006 - 43 Bailey on track for more OFSAA medals Abbey Park student Caitlin Bailey is one of Oakville's main medal hopes as the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) trackand-field championships are held this week in Etobicoke. Bailey, a provincial gold medalist in the junior girls' 400-metre two years ago, won both the 400m and 800m races at last week's south regional meet in St. Catharines. In her second year of senior, Bailey hopes to improve on last year's OFSAA showing where she earned bronze in the 800m and placed fourth in the 400m. Several other local athletes won an event at south regionals and also have OFSAA medal aspirations, including Abbey Park students Michael Trnkus, Kevin Cox and Danny Francis. Trnkus won the midget boys' 400m and claimed silver in the 200m at regionals, while Cox finished first in junior boys' 800m and third in 400m. Francis won gold in the senior boys' 2,000m steeplechase. Abbey Park's 4x400m senior boys' relay team of Brad Amos, Jimmy Tat, Mike Sebben, Cox and Trnkus also has medal hopes after winning at regionals, as does Loyola's junior girls' 4x100m relay squad of Chandail Brandis, Alex Pecar, Kacy Gray, Ashlie Tracey and Christina Shaw. Also winning an event at regionals was Iroquois Ridge's Patrice Wright, who crossed the line first in the midget girls' 100m and was second in the 200m. When we had the ball, we held onto it, but then it was just little mistakes here and there... and it came down to fitness in the end." Evans credited Robert Woo, Murray Cruickshank, Brendan Farrer and Jon McMurrich as keys to the Tigers' season. Blakelock, despite fielding a team comprised of mostly first-year seniors, surprised a few teams by reaching the Halton final. Actually, most expected the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to oppose OT in the regional championship game. However, the Irish was forced to forfeit a regular-season game after using an ineligible player, meaning it finished second and had to face the Devils in the semifinal round. "Our guys were probably overconfident to start (Wednesday) because we played Notre Dame last week and that was the big game," Schaffler said. "I think it took our guys about 10 minutes to realize they were in for a game. The heat took its toll and we started to click after that." The Red Devils, provincial bronze medalists a year ago, will again compete at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championships, June 7-9 in Markham.
