44 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 2, 2006 Grigor finishes off high school career with second straight Halton title White Oaks golfer headed to Newberry College next year By Herb Garbutt OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF HERB GARBUTT / OAKVILLE BEAVER CHIPPING AWAY: White Oaks' Sarah Grigor chips on to the 16th green Wednesday at Glen Abbey. Grigor, who will attend Newberry College next year on a golf scholarship, posted a nine-stroke victory for her second straight Halton girls' golf title. Golf may have ruined her hockey career but Sarah Grigor doesn't mind. Grigor won her second straight Halton girls golf championship on Wednesday, shooting a round of 90 at Glen Abbey to post a nine-stroke victory over Notre Dame's Paula DiFancesco. The Grade 12 student at White Oaks only took up golf in Grade 9 but has progressed quickly in the sport. "Someone saw me play, saw my swing and said I should try for a golf scholarship so I started taking lessons and my scores started to drop. Then I went through the process of writing my SATs." Two weeks ago, she landed a scholarship at Newberry College, a Division II school in South Carolina. The only downside is it's going to be hard to find a hockey game in South Carolina. "When I started looking (at schools) I was going to see if I could go somewhere where I could play hockey too," said Grigor, a forward on the Oakville Hornets midget team. "I wish I could do both." For now, golf isn't working out too badly for Grigor, who plays four or five rounds a week and is a member at the North Halton Golf and Country Club in Georgetown. This weekend she'll be teeing it up with fellow North Halton member and four-time Canadian amateur champion Mary Ann Lapointe. Wednesday, Grigor wasn't impressed with her round of 90 at the site of many Canadian Opens. Although she felt her chipping game let her down a little, Grigor still finished the day with nine pars, the last on Glen Abbey's legendary 18th hole. "My mental game wasn't there today," she said. She could be forgiven for not being entirely focused. She fired a 79 at Blue Springs Golf Club in early May that gave her a 12-shot lead heading into second round of the two-day combined score tournament. Even though DiFrancesco bettered her round with a 87, it still left her with a nine-shot victory. And in a scheduling quirk, Grigor had already competed in the biggest high school tournament of the year. She finished eighth last Thursday at the Ontario Federation of Schools Athletic Association (OFSAA) championship in Sutton, shooting a round of 80. T.A. Blakelock's Sarah Magee was fourth with a two-day total of 199. Loyola teammates Jaclyn Quinn (202) and Stephanie Secord (203) were fifth and sixth. Blakelock's Mike Lorenz and Holy Trinity's Andrew Marchand were the top Oakville finishers in the boys' standings, tying for 11th with a three-round total of 239. Iroquois Ridge was the top Oakville school in the team standings, finishing fifth with a team total of 992. Notre Dame won the championship for the second year in a row.
