20 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 3, 2006 Volunteers at more than 70 CARSTAR collision repair centres across Canada will roll up their sleeves to `soap it up' as part of an ongoing campaign to help the thousands of young Canadians battling cystic fibrosis (CF). The third annual CARSTAR Soaps it Up National Car Wash is Saturday, June 10 at Trafalgar CARSTAR Collision, 547 Trafalgar Rd., call 905-845-7579. All proceeds from the car wash will support the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Annual car wash supports CCFF research Seminar on stroke at OTMH Foundation (CCFF) and local fundraising organizations. The monies raised for the CCFF will be directed toward research and treatment. Cystic fibrosis is the most common, fatal genetic disease affecting young Canadians. A devastating disease, CF attacks primarily the lungs and the digestive system. In 2006, the CCFF will fund more than 45 research projects, including research into lung transplantation. While transplantation is not a cure for CF, it does offer new hope. The procedure replaces severely damaged lungs with healthy ones, and puts individuals with CF in a stronger position to fight some of the other symptoms of the disease. "Lung transplantation has quickly become a viable option for young Canadians with cystic fibrosis, and research supported by the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation in this field is constantly advancing thanks to the support of caring partners like CARSTAR," said Cathleen Morrison, CEO of the CCFF. "Many Canadians with cystic fibrosis describe their transplant as a second chance at life. It's a clean start for them, and the surgery can significantly improve their quality of life." CARSTAR Automotive Canada has been a dedicated supporter of the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for several years, after it was discovered that the granddaughter of a CARSTAR franchisee was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Tickets for the June 10 car wash cost $5 each and include a coupon towards the purchase of a Mr. Clean All-in-One Carwash Kit and the chance to win a luxurious hot tub. A free seminar, Understanding Stroke: Are You At Risk?, is set for Wednesday, June 7 at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital (OTMH) as part of Halton Healthcare Services' Living Healthy series. Dr. A. Douen, neurologist, Halton Healthcare, will provide information on prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment of stroke. His presentation will be followed by questions and answers. A stroke is a sudden loss of brain function. It is caused by the interruption of the flow of blood to the brain or the rupture of blood vessels in the brain. This causes brain cells in the affected area to die. The effects of a stroke depend upon where the brain was injured, as well as how much damage occurred. Between 40,000 and 50,000 people are affected by strokes in Canada each year. About 300,000 Canadians are living with the effects of stroke. After age 55, risk of stroke doubles every 10 years. It's the fourth leading cause of death in Canada. The seminar will be held at the Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital Auditorium, 327 Reynolds St., opening with displays and refreshments at 6:30 p.m. and the seminar commencing at 7 p.m. To reserve contact 905-338-4379 or elittle@haltonhealthcare.on.ca.
