Wall to Wall Warhol is the first public look at selections from the collection of Toronto art collector and philanthropist, Salah J. Bachir. Warhol brings basic human themes to the forefront in his works ­ the beauty of youth and fame, consumer culture, the passing of time and the presence of death. Using repetitive imagery and mass-production techniques, he unmasks the fixations of a consumer-based culture. Wall to Wall Warhol: from the collection of Salah J. Art society holds 40th annual auction The Oakville Art Society (OAS) is hosting its 40th annual Art Auction on Saturday. The live auction will feature more than 80 paintings, pottery and sculptures by local and internationally recognized Canadian artists. "It's a very fun time, it's very informal," said past-president and 20-year OAS member, Marguerite Broten, who will be auctioning some of her pottery. "The Oakville community is always very encouraging in coming out to see the works." The proceeds will go towards the OAS, which is in its 41st year. "We have two major fundraisers a year, the Art Auction being one of them and Art in the Park being the other," said Broten. "Those two fundraisers allow us to have funds to subsidize our classes that we teach. We try and teach all our adult and children classes at a minimal cost so that we can service our community as well as we can." The works of well-known artists including Robert Bateman and the late Thomas Chatfield will be up for auction, along with the works of OAS instructors and up-and-coming young artists. Mayor Ann Mulvale will open the auction and is "always very encouraging to get the public to get bidding," said Broten. In addition to the more than 80 works in the live auction, approximately 45 smaller items will be auctioned off in a silent auction. All of the items will be on display at Centennial Gallery, 120 Navy St., for viewing before the show from Saturday, June 3 ­ Saturday, June 10. Inhabiting opens June 22, a selection of photographic works that serve as an ecological critique of the effect of urbanization on the environment. Hayeur investigates the theme from three angles: Model Homes, a succession of frontal portraits of suburban homes, Excavations, ground level views of suburban groupings and the soil around them, and Destinations, large-scale depictions of the coexistence of human habitats and their natural surroundings. Each work incorporates several images in an apparently seamless representation. Many of the works merge widely differing perspectives and scales to offer an elaborate, artificial construction, though it appears a natural scene. Inhabiting opens Thursday, June 22 from 7 ­ 8 p.m. at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square, 120 Navy St. Hayeur will conduct a walk-through starting at 7 p.m. The show is curated by Serge Berard and runs from June 23 ­ August 27.
