42 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 9, 2006 Dolphins finish third in Guelph Aquinas stronger each game Dolphins Swim Club members combined to set 20 club records at a recent meet in Guelph, helping the Dolphins to a third-place finish. Jacinda Smit led the way by winning five gold medals at the competition, including a 15-and-over girls' relay victory with teammates Alex VanOmmen, Lydia McKee and Alana Boffa. Maggie Burns, Holly Olsen, Cole VanOmmen, Sinead Russell and McKee each added three individual gold. Ryan Maccarone, Tera VanBeilen and Alex VanOmmen won two races each, with Lauren Dixon, Bronwyn Evans, Sarah Watts, Ola Michalec, Peter Kruzyk, Jeremy Ramshaw and Cameron Russell also claiming gold. Other Dolphins team members to win medals were Kelsie McNeil, Conor Russell, Joey Weatherill, James Richards, Jason Bysice, Alana Smit and Olivia George-Parker. The host Guelph Marlins won the overall title, with Ajax finishing second. Continued from page 39 play, going 2-0-2. Still, it was a far cry from the silver-medal year when they were beating teams by four and five goals. "We definitely got stronger with each game," said Yantho. "Once the nerves settled down from being at OFSAA, they really started to play well." The Raiders opened with a 1-0 win over Trinity College. Their following game, Da Rosa and Ashlee Michie scored in a 2-2 tie with Jean Vanier. On Day 2, Adamic scored twice and Wood added one in a 3-0 victory over Dryden. Aquinas finished pool play with a scoreless tie against Holy Cross. Then things got serious. "Every game our coaches would start by saying `Six games to glory, five games to glory," Adamic said. After a 2-1 quarter-final win over Bishop MacDonnell, in which Jane Arizza and Dziedzic scored, it was only two games to glory. Playing their sixth game in three days -- seventh for a few players who drove home for a rep game Monday night -- the Raiders finally got a breather with a 5-0 win over another St. Joseph's (Cornwall) squad. Cassandra Russo led the Raiders with two goals, while Jaime Neefs, Michie and Adamic scored the others. Then it was one game to glory. Then one goal. Then one shot. "It's almost not believable," Wood said. "If someone said it was going to end like that, I would have told them they were crazy. It's like a storybook."
