The Oakville Beaver www.oakvillebeaver.com A Metroland Publication Vol. 44 No. 70 Residents unite against apartment proposal Developer wants to double height of building to eight storeys By Angela Blackburn OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF Northeast Oakville residents hope to resurrect the defunct Iroquois Ridge Residents' Association (IRRA) to fight the doubling in height of an apartment building in their neighbourhood. The residents who live near Prince Michael Drive and Dundas Street were at council last month to voice their opposition to the plan. When the meeting ran overtime, they were told to return to Monday's Planning and Development Council for the continuation. They did and patiently waited 90 minutes as a legal/property matter was ironed out by council before hearing that the proposal they're fighting will be delayed again -- this time to enable further discussion among the town, residents and the developer, all of whom met last Thursday in an attempt to find a compromise. The delay will provide time for the residents to organize themselves -- the most expedient way of doing so is the resurrection of IRRA. It's an incorporated group -- which is needed if residents choose to go before the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and it will present a vehicle to unify residents' voices -- something that carries clout with council. The residents are opposed to a plan by developer Ashley Oak Homes -- CERTIFIED Oakville's 2000 -2006 Five Star Certified Dealership 175 WYECROFT ROAD, OAKVILLE 905.845.6653 (between Kerr & Dorval) Wyecroft Rd. "We have a destination in sight. Let's see how we can get there," said Mayor Ann Mulvale at Monday's Planning and Development Council meeting. After 90 minutes behind closed doors with Toronto lawyer Jane Pepino, who represented the Town in last winter's seven-week Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing, council voted unanimously to ask staff to report on acquisition options that included expropriation -- as well as potential partnerships and funding options needed to make it happen. Bronte Village Residents Association (BVRA) founder Laurie McGinn, who personally represented the residents' group alongside high-powered lawyers during the OMB hearing, told council she and the BVRA appreciated the town's backing to date and will stay the course.
