26 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 16, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Desperate housewives walking to find cure for breast cancer By Marcella Mailing SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Desperate for a Cure Housewives is the name of our team and desperate we are for a cure for this devastating disease called breast cancer. We began last year as a team of 10 women, who all have their own personal reasons for becoming involved and taking time out of their busy lives to participate in The Weekend To End Breast Cancer. We committed to walking and raising a minimum of $2,000 each. Last year we more than doubled our contribution raising a total of $44,000. This year some of the faces have changed. There are three of the original members and four new ones, two of which have loved ones battling cancer. To prepare for the walk, the team meets every Monday night for training. We meet at a local coffee shop and walk for 2 1/2 hours. Walking 60 kilometers is a challenge that requires preparation and hard work. Some of the innovative fundraising events the team has hosted include Tarot Card readings, belly dancing, house concerts, garage sales, spa days, flower sales, not to mention striptease lessons. They have also relied on donations from friends, family and local businesses. Two of the upcoming fundraising events would not be possible without the generosity of the merchants of Bronte. The store owners along the Bronte Road corridor and the Bronte Village Mall have donated merchandise for a basket to be raffled. Debbie and Susan of Finials have volunteered to create the gift basket, which contains such items as jewelry, clothing, gift certificates, spa treatments to name just a few and is currently valued at over $1,200. We are selling tickets, one for $5 and three for $10. The draw will take place at Bronte's Canada Day Festival on July 1. For the Canada Day Festival, the team will have a booth set up on Bronte Road South. The emphasis will be activities for the children such as face painting, and an art competition. One display will be our `Washing Line of Hope,' a must see so come on down. On Saturday June 17, we will be hosting a Bronte Summer Social at the Bronte Legion at 79 Jones St. The Legion has generously donated the space and there will be a DJ (who has offered his services), dancing, door prizes, a raffle, and a silent auction. A cold buffet will be SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER DESPERATE WOMEN: Desperate For a Cure Housewives are front row from left, Denese Hall, Vicki Fiddler, Lorraine Reber., and at back from left, Bettina McMahon, Marcella Mailing and Rosie Stojanovski. served, prepared by the Desperate For a Cure Housewives. Tickets cost $25 and can be obtained by calling 905-4690488. "We wanted to offer people something in return for their donation. There are so many causes out there now that people are suffering from donor fatigue and everyone we've spoken to wants to dance," says Lorraine Reber one of the housewives. Special thanks goes to the Kirkwood Group who have made an incredible donation to our team, as well as providing their Yellowtail wine for most of our fundraising events. The Desperate For a Cure Housewives would like to extend our sincere thanks to the local Bronte merchants for all their support and generosity. It reinforces the fact that although we have grown into such a big town we've still managed to maintain that small town feeling. Bronte has been referred to as the diamond in the rough and we are well on our way to becoming a renowned diamond.
