Following is information on the Blakelock, Trinity, White Oaks, Iroquois Ridge and Aquinas athletes of the year. Bios of athletes from the other area schools were unavailable at press time. T.A. Blakelock Mike Lorenz helped the Tigers' volleyball and hockey teams reach the Halton finals this season, also finding time to compete in badminton and golf. The 17-year-old competed in four Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) tournaments during his time at Blakelock, including a fourth-place finish in golf last year. Lorenz will attend Queen's University this fall, where he hopes to play varsity volleyball or golf and pursue a career as an athletic trainer, physiotherapist, golf instructor or physical education teacher. Lauren Hounsell was the most valuable player of Blakelock's basketball, volleyball and tennis squads, still managing to maintain a 90 per cent average in her studies. Hounsell, 17, led the Tigers' basketball team in scoring and rebounding, co-captained both the basketball and volleyball clubs, and also competed in tennis. The 5-foot-9 senior will study science at the University of Guelph and plans to play volleyball or tennis for the Gryphons. Iroquois Ridge Kevin Jones earned graduating letters in volleyball, basketball and baseball at Iroquois Ridge. The 18-year-old also participated in the International Games Festival. This fall, Jones will attend Fleming College and study Sporting Goods Business. Shannon Massie also received graduating letters for volleyball, basketball and soccer for the Trailblazers. White Oaks The past season was a breakthrough one for Daniel Hanky, who was named White Oaks' most-improved player in volleyball, baseball and basketball. Hanky also played badminton for the Wildcats this year and maintained a 78 per cent average in his studies. The 17-year-old will go to the University of Waterloo next year, pursuing a degree in recreation and leisure studies with a minor in business. He also intends to play for the Waterloo baseball team. Brittany Parkyn will take her field and ice hockey skills down under next year. The 17-year-old is off to Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, where she wants to compete in field hockey and rugby while studying science. Parkyn was the captain of White Oaks' field hockey team, alternate captain of the ice hockey squad, earned silver in war canoe and also played rugby and badminton.
