28 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 17, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Professional and family caregivers coping with Alzheimer's Disease, as well as faculty, students and the community, are invited to attend a research-based drama on living with dementia, June 22 at the Sheridan Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning. The Sheridan Elder Research Centre (SERC) and the Halton Dementia Network present I'm Still Here, a play created by Act II Studio ­ Ryerson University. The intent of this drama is to help others understand the experience of living with and caring for those with dementia; and by doing so diminish unnecessary suffering for persons and families living with Alzheimer's play at Sheridan Team raising funds for breast cancer research dementia. More than a decade of research by Nurse Researchers ­ Dr. Christine Jonas-Simpson of Sunnybrook and Women's Hospital and Dr. Gail Mitchell of York University ­ influence this play. There is no cost to attend I'm Still Here, 7 ­ 9 p.m., at the Sheridan Centre for Animation and Emerging Technologies (SCAET) auditorium, on Ceremonial Drive off Trafalgar Road. Registration is not required. "Anyone who has a personal or professional interest in and/or who has a family member impacted by Alzheimer's Disease and Related Dementia (ADRD) will find this beneficial," said SERC Director Pat Spadafora. "The play is intended to demonstrate how it might help them to think about the person who is still there despite their cognitive impairment." Geoff Quirt, Assistant Deputy Minister, Ontario Seniors Secretariat (OSS) and SERC board member will open the event. Act II Studio is a theatre school and creative drama centre for adults 50-plus at Ryerson University. There will be an opportunity after the play for dialogue with the actors. She has raced in the Canadian National Women's Dragon Boat Team in world competition. "We came second out of 40 teams at the Mississauga Canoe Club's Dragon Boat Regatta in Port Credit last weekend," she continued. "We were beaten by only this much," she said, indicating a pinch between her thumb and index finger. "It was fun." The team has been racing for four years. "Last year we raced in Milton and won," said Liptok. During its first two years, the Wonderbroads raced at Toronto Island, last year Milton was added to the schedule, and this year, they're racing in Mississauga and Toronto Island. "The Toronto Island race is the big one." The 18th annual Toronto International Dragon Boat Festival will be held on June 24 and 25. But winning races is only part of the team's goal.
