30 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 17, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com FREEDOM OF THE SEAS It's official: Freedom of the Seas, Royal Caribbean's latest excursion into the world of mega ships is now the largest ever - 160,000 grt size - eclipsing the Queen Mary 2's 148,000 grt. The stats: taller than the Eiffel Tower, twice as high as the Statue of Liberty, wider than the White House is long, equal to the size of Royal Caribbean's first four ships put together. The activities onboard are incredible. The sports deck alone features FlowRider - a 40x32 ft. surfing simulator, the biggest rock climbing wall on any ship, a nine hole golf course and simulator and a sports court for basketball, paddleball and volleyball. Down in the bowels on Deck 2, there's the Studio B ice rink for recreational skating (skates for rent) and a colourful ice show. The enormous pool deck boasts a spectacular H2O Zone water park. For eating and drinking, the ship offers an amazing 30 public rooms and on-deck bars including an English pub, Vintages wine bar, and even a Ben & Jerry's on the 150-yard long Royal Promenade. Two specialty restaurants, Portofino and Chops Grille, are perfect for a special night out and there are other casual outlets including a pizzeria. There's also a high-tech karaoke bar with full video-recording facilities for budding performers. This 3,634 passenger ship, the first in Royal Caribbean's new Freedom class, sails seven-night Western Caribbean itineraries from Miami calling in Cozumel; George Town, Grand Cayman; Montego Bay and Royal Caribbean's private destination, Labadee. Coyotes champs in Burlington The Oakville 10-and-under Tour Coyotes earned a spot in the platinum division of this year's North American championships by winning the Ontario Minor Roller Hockey NARCH Qualifier tournament in Burlington recently. Oakville rolled over its three opponents (Burlington, London and Brampton), scoring 35 times and allowing only eight goals. Head coach Matt Swain and assistant coach Rod Yeo were pleased with the Coyotes' showing, but reminded the squad that it must adjust to inline roller hockey's faster break-out and breakaway style of play if it hopes to fare well at the North American championships. The Coyotes, finalists at the Brampton NARCH qualifier earlier this year and semifinalist at a similar event in Detroit, are currently preparing for the North American championships. That tournament will be held later this summer at Mississauga's Hershey Centre. The club, which includes Brenton Chilton, Emily Mann, Michael Yeo, Michael Prapavessis, Tyler Kitzul, Hunter Swain, Cole Taylor, Luke Shiplo and Matthew Kaslik, will also compete in its own tournament during next weekend's Waterfront Festival. Most games will be held at Oakville Arena and admission is free. TOP DOGS: The Oakville 10-and-under Coyotes display the hardware they earned by winning a roller hockey qualifier in Burlington.
