40 - The Oakville Beaver Weekend, Saturday June 24, 2006 www.oakvillebeaver.com Youngsters win McDonald tourney High school athletes of the year Former Oakville tyke AAA Rangers Bailey Newton and Domenico Commisso helped the Regional Express Gold squad dominate a major hockey tournament recently in Toronto. The Regional Express Gold won all seven of its games at the Ronald McDonald AAA Summer Hockey Tournament, outscoring its opposition 52-4. The squad, based out of Brantford and featuring players from London, Hamilton, Burlington, Oakville and Mississauga, clinched the title with a 5-0 victory over the defending champion Midwest Wild in the final. The tournament drew nearly 200 teams, including squads from Quebec and the United States. The Regional Express Gold's closest contest was a 4-1 victory over Pro Hockey. Newton and Commisso will suit up this season for the Oakville novice Rangers. Many of the local high school athleteof-the-year award winners were recognized at a barbecue last week at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, with their bios appearing in a recent edition of The Oakville Beaver. Some schools, however, had not announced their athlete-of-the-year winners since they had not yet held their athletic banquets. Following are details on the rest of the local winners: Oakville Trafalgar Mike Scholz captained OT's senior rugby, hockey and football teams and was named MVP of the latter two squads. A former OT junior athlete-of-theyear award winner as well, Scholz's highlight as a Red Devil was helping the school's rugby squad win OFSAA bronze last year. Scholz will attend McMaster University this fall, where he hopes to play rugby for the Marauders. Kirsten Passmore played basketball, volleyball and rugby for the Red Devils this past year, leading the hoops and rugby teams in scoring. She was also OT's top offensive basketball and rugby player in 2005, and competed in three OFSAA championships (rugby in 2004 and 2006, and volleyball in 2006) with the Red Devils. Passmore will next study kinesiology at Wilfrid Laurier University. Loyola Steve Schmeer displayed his many athletic abilities this past season, competing in volleyball, swimming, badminton and golf at Loyola. Schmeer won the Halton championship in badminton this year, finished second in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference championships and posted a 2-2 record at OFSAA. The 18-year-old has accepted a golf scholarship from Sacred Heart University in Connecticut, a NCAA Division 1 school, where he will study business specializing in Sports Management. Kaitlyn Halik was a key part of Loyola's Halton girls' hockey championship team this year, also suiting up for the Hawks in field hockey and soccer. The 18-year-old, who maintained an 82 per cent average in her studies, will attend the University of Western Ontario next year in pursuit of a kinesiology degree. Abbey Park Geoff McLaughlin captained Abbey Park's senior basketball team to a surprise appearance in the Halton AAA final this season, also playing volleyball for the Eagles. He will attend McMaster University this fall, where he plans to play basketball for the Marauders. Caitlin Bailey enjoyed her best trackand-field season as an Eagle, winning gold in both senior 400-metre and 800m at the OFSAA championships. Bailey, off to Boston College in the fall, leaves Abbey Park with five OFSAA track medals, including three gold. www.oakvillebeaver.com WAL-MART CORRECTION NOTICE Due to circumstances beyond our control the Men's Pure Extreme Driver (#999432/9) advertised in our current flyer (expiring June 30th) will not be available.
