Pud By Steve Nease snease@haltonsearch.com Leadership candidates make ptich to Halton Liberals By Kim Arnott SPECIAL TO THE BEAVER Competing visions for the future of Canada were on display Wednesday night, as eight candidates vying for the leadership of the federal Liberal party visited Halton. The $125 a ticket event at Milton's RattleSnake Point Golf Club, attracted about 100 people, along with candidates Joe Volpe, Carolyn Bennett, Hedy Fry, Maurizio Bevilacqua, Bob Rae, Gerard Kennedy, Stephane Dion, and Martha Hall Findlay. Only candidates Scott Brison, Michael Ignatieff and Ken Dryden were missing. Organized by the Halton Federal Liberal Riding Association, the event offered each candidate the opportunity to give a brief speech before mingling with the crowd. Amrit Rai, membership secretary for the riding association, said he was pleased with the turnout. Rai, who was campaign manager for Gary Carr in the 2004 election, is throwing his support behind former Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Joe Volpe in the leadership campaign. He said he believes the public is now looking to the Liberal's future, rather than dwelling on the party's past. "We're not having any problems signing up members," he said, pre- dicting that the riding association will have close to 1,500 members by the end of June, which is the cut-off date for signing up new members eligible to vote in the leadership selection. Like Rai, many members of the audience sported buttons announcing their allegiance to one candidate or another. But while the politicians did much preaching to the already-converted, they also had an opportunity to sway some undecided listeners, including Mississauga voters Brian McGrath and Lydia Koop. They aren't card-carrying Liberals, or members of any other political party, although Koop described herself cautiously as, "generally more of a Liberal supporter." They came out simply to hear the candidates deliver their four-minutelong speeches to the crowd. "There were a number that were impressive," said Koop. "But if I were voting today, I would tend to vote for Bob Rae." Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn, the only high-profile local Liberal on hand at Wednesday's event, isn't endorsing anyone, at least at this point. "Right now I'm a neutral," said Flynn, who said he admires many of the candidates but wishes to let individual party members take part in the leadership selection process without any weight from elected politicians.
