The 33-year-old Bronte native picked up best lead performance by a male in a musical at the awards show Monday for his portrayal of Gollum in the $27 million Mirvish production of J.R.R. Tolkien's famed trilogy, The Lord of the Rings. "It's a nice honour to be recognized," said the Sheridan Theatre grad, who beat out costars Peter Howe and Brent Carver. "You're always up against other fantastic actors that have done amazing jobs." This is the second time Therriault has won for best lead male in a musical at the Doras, which recognize Toronto's theatre, dance and opera productions. His first win was two years ago for his portrayal of Leo Bloom in The Producers. But being recognized for playing a two-faced, hunchbacked, scratchy-voiced creature, Therriault admits, is special. "Acting is never easy, but this has definitely been a lot of fun because it's different from any other parts I've played," he said. "It's definitely nice to be recognized in this case because it was such a big challenge. "I think I did alright," he added, laughing. of the most amazing shows I've ever seen in my life and I hope that people will see it, because it's the kind of show you'll never see anywhere again." After playing Gollum eight times a week in the three and a half hour shows, and putting on a costume and makeup that takes two hours to put together, Therriault says he doesn't know how he'll feel once the final curtain falls in Michael Therriault as Gollum September. "I'm not too sure," he said, after a short pause. "Ask me in a few months." An edited, shorter version of The Lord of the Rings is set to open in May 2007 in London, England, starring Toronto's Frodo and London native, James Loye. -- Krissie Rutherford can be reached at krutherford@oakvillebeaver.com. Despite mixed reviews, The Lord of the Rings picked up seven Doras Monday, the most of any Toronto theatrical production this season, including outstanding new musical, outstanding production of a musical and outstanding direction of a musical. "We're really proud of the show and it's a really big honour to win so many awards," said Therriault. "It makes us proud of what we worked so hard to achieve." But the show will only go on for two more months. A lack of sell-out crowds led producer Kevin Wallace to announce earlier this week that the world premiere production of The Lord of the Rings, which was expected to run at least a year, will close Sept. 3, just seven months after it opened. "It's a little sad that it's closing the closing dates are never expected," said Therriault. "I think we've done really well this is one Halton Region On behalf of Halton Regional Council, I'd like to wish everyone a safe and happy Canada Day Chairman Joyce Savoline RESIDENTIAL, COMMERCIAL AWNINGS, CANOPIES, PORTABLE SHADE STRUCTURES 1151 Bronte Road, Oakville, Ontario L6M 3L1 Tel: 905-825-6000 · Toll Free: 1-866-4HALTON TTY: 905-827-9833 · www.halton.ca Enjoy the outdoors relaxing under a Sunguard awning manufactured with your choice of fade proof Sunbrella fabric, and powered by a reliable Somfy remote controlled motor.
