Working to control West Nile virus Each year, Halton Region works to control West Nile virus (WNV) through a comprehensive plan that includes public education, surveillance, and a larviciding program on public property. Halton residents have helped in this effort by reporting dead bird sightings and eliminating standing water on their properties. A. Wear pants and long-sleeved tops that are light in colour and made of tightly woven materials. Apply an approved insect repellent, such as one containing DEET. Remember that mosquitoes are most active from dusk to dawn and any time in shady, wooded areas.
