www.oakvillebeaver.com The Oakville Beaver, Friday June 30, 2006 - 27 Six local schools reap rewards of Go Fit! Fitness Challenge Six Oakville schools have earned up to $500 in Wintergreen Phys-ed credits towards new gym equipment after successfully completing the Go Active! Fitness Challenge. Presented by McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Limited with support from the Canadian Olympic Committee, more than 170 schools across the province made the grade to receive the funding. The challenge began in September, and was designed to promote and improve physical fitness among students. Participating teachers tested students on six exercises: crunches, push-ups, 50-metre dash, shuttle run, standing long jump and an endurance run. Students are tested once in the fall and again in the spring, aiming for individual improvement rather than focusing on excellence. Results are then submitted to the Fitness Challenge website and eligible classes earn $200 in Wintergreen Phys-ed credits per class, up to a maximum of $500 per school. Holy Family, Pine Grove, Sheridan P.S., St. Marguerite D'Youville, St. Matthew and St. Michael completed the Go Active! Fitness Challenge with 20 classes and 330 students participating. By participating in the Go Active! Fitness Challenge and exercising regularly, Holy Family students were able to improve on all six compulsory exercises by an average of 11.97 per cent. Participant's scores were measured in May and combined with those achieved in September to determine their level of improvement. "McDonald's is thrilled that students from across Ontario rose to the challenge and made a personal commitment to improve their physical fitness," said Barry Desclouds, Ontario Regional Vice President, McDonald's Restaurants of Canada Limited. "The Go Active! Fitness Challenge is one way we are demonstrating our commitment and dedication to encouraging a balanced, active lifestyle among young Canadians."
