Groundbreaking career move From the Ground Up finalist wins $250,000 From the Ground Up with Debbie Travis wrapped up its first season live-to-air in front of more than 300 fans in Oakville Sunday as the design diva announced 22-year-old Ryan Anderson had won the show's $250,000 cash reward. The 10-episode reality show tracked 12 Canadian 20-somethings as they built a 4,000 square foot luxury mansion in just five weeks while learning the tricks of the trade from experienced master craftsmen. The 383 Morrison Rd. home sold in April by Century 21, and viewer votes determined which of the show's contestants would receive some of the profits. Anderson, a Vancouver resident and new father, beat out the seven other finalists, who were eliminated one-by-one in front of enthusiastic fans, family and friends outside the mansion during the morning taping, which aired later that night on Global. Ryan Anderson celebrates. "I am thrilled with the choice of the winner that the country voted for," said Travis. "I agree with them. Ryan has integrity, is hard-working, and is an all around good guy. The ability and craftsmanship will come later. Ryan is exactly what the trade industry needs." The other finalists didn't go away empty handed, though. The last seven standing each received a $10,000 gift certificate from Canadian Tire. Travis, who created and hosts the show, hoped From the Ground Up would show the trades to be a viable career option while teaching 20-somethings about work ethic, something she believes that generation is lacking. Last summer, she went across Canada interviewing young people who needed a break and a second chance. Anderson was working at a grocery store and his girlfriend, Darcie Steele, was six-months pregnant when he was selected for the show. Both Steele and now eight-month-old Jordynn were at the taping to congratulate Anderson on his win.
