On the first day of summer, the headquarters for Pelmorex Media Inc. owner of The Weather Network and its French counterpart, MeteoMedia invited clients and those who had a hand in building the new 60,000-square-foot facility for a day of celebrating that included tours, weather lessons, games and the unveiling of a plaque to commemorate the move. "It's a dream come true for me and many other members of our team, and today we're here to celebrate the realization of that dream," Pelmorex CEO and President Pierre Morrissette told the more than 150 people at a ceremony held outside the 2655 Bristol Circle building. "It's a wonderful new home. We're so proud to have this memorial of what we've accomplished over 18 years, and also, to be here in Oakville." Mayor Ann Mulvale was on hand to extend an official welcome to the formerly Mississauga-based company, which she called "a valued trophy asset" to the town. "Thank you for choosing Oakville. We know that as you succeed, we will continue to succeed," she said. "You are tied to our success as a community, and we value having each one of you here." Mulvale also pointed out that with Hwy. 403 and QEW not far away, and with the close proximity to "Hazel's territory" and Pearson airport, Oakville is a prime location for The Weather Network. An Oakville resident, Morrissette and Pelmorex began planning the move from Mississauga two years ago a tough operation for a station that's live-to-air 24 hours a day, seven days a week. But it was a necessary change the old 35,000- square-foot facility wasn't big enough. "We were growing rapidly, and we were outgrowing our home. We needed a brand new place, something that would eloquently describe what we're all about," said Morrissette, noting The Weather Network serves more than 12 million viewers and is the most widely distributed and most frequently watched amongst specialty TV networks in Canada. The company's employee base has also more than doubled since 1993, and now boasts approximately 350 staff members. More than 200 work out of the new $18million Oakville facility, which houses TV production and studios on the first floor and The Weather Network website, which is among the top five in Canada, on the second floor. "The bottom line is we are the leader in the weather information services in Canada, and that's because 350 people made that happen," said Morrissette, extending a thank-you to his staff. He also applauded everyone from the purchasers of the land to the designers and contractors who assisted in making the move problem-free. Mulvale noted the town was happy to help out. "The various departments of the town have been pleased to work with you to get you open in time," she said. "It was an ambitious time frame but that speaks to our commitment of listening to what our customer needs and delivering." And there's been a lot of interest in the new building, so far, said Deanna Langton, marketing and audience relations coordinator of The Weather Network, who was giving tours of the studios throughout the day, allowing guests to do mock forecasts and fielding questions. "I've been really busy I'm actually amazed at how many tours I have coming up," she said. "I'm not sure if it's Oakville or the new location, but it's really peaked a lot of interest." -- Krissie Rutherford can be reached at krutherford@oakvillebeaver.com.
