Join Richard Messer, chair of the Kerr Village BIA and its board of directors in raising the Canadian flag at noon in Heritage Square. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn will follow with opening remarks and a cakecutting ceremony. There will be live entertainment for both the young and the young at heart, a chance to see local artists in action, experience henna tattooing with Bert Jackson, and hear local musicians. Light refreshments will be available, with the proceeds going to Kerr Street Ministries for its continued support of youth. The fun and festivities will move to the lower part of Kerr Street (between Rebecca Street and Lakeshore Road) as it is closed to traffic from 2-6 p.m. Live entertainment will be provided by Oakville's own headliners The Kings ­ (Switching to Glide), sharing the stage with SkyStone, Volition Aire and other talented Canadian musicians. A full afternoon lineup includes skateboard demonstrations by Hustler Skateboards. Local artist Bert Jackson will showcase his talent, and merchants will offer displays. Hosted by the Bronte BIA the day will begin with a pancake breakfast and end with fireworks, with lots of fun and music in between. The pancake breakfast, served by the Oakville Lions Club, starts at 9 a.m. The opening ceremonies will begin at 12 noon on the stage at Bronte Road and Marine Drive with Town Crier Ian Burkholder proclaiming Canada Day. Bronte Road will be closed to traffic from Marine Drive to Jones Street. Birthday cake will be served after the greetings by local dignitaries and the singing of O Canada performed by Rebecca Fernandes. Mike Morningstar will present a martial arts demonstration during the serving of the Canada Day birthday cake at 12:45 p.m. The cake is sponsored by Sobeys. The Bronte Butterfly Foundation is inviting families, friends and nature enthusiasts to enjoy a nature walk through Bronte Village and along the Oakville Heritage Trail in Bronte. The walk will start at the Butterfly Gazebo at Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park at 2 p.m. This free trek will explore the natural environment, local areas of interest and count butterflies. The walk will take approximately l 1/2 hours, but could be done much sooner by those who choose to hike or bike instead. Bronte Road between Marine Drive and Jones Street will be lined with local and visiting vendors doing demonstrations, selling crafts, gifts, jewelry and food. There will be face painters and bouncies for the kids. There will also be horse-and-wagon rides. The Kinsmen Club will be hosting the beer Garden in Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park near the Butterfly Gazebo from 12 - 10 p.m. John Marlatt and the Pic-A-Deli will be providing musical entertainment in the Butterfly Gazebo during the afternoon. The final judging for Battle of the Band Contest begins at the Bronte Road stage at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Moonshine Café and the Pic-a-Deli. This is the final judging to select the top bands, consisting of talented Oakville and Bronte amateur entertainers. The Battle of the Bands winners will open for flamenco guitarist Johannes Linstead at 7 p.m. Linstead, an award-winning international star who lives in Oakville, entertains at 8 p.m. All of Linstead's albums have charted on Billboard. Mediterranea, released in 2004, shot straight to the Top 10, reaching the No. 6 position, and won Best World Album in the NAR Lifestyle Music Awards.
