Oakville won 11-8. he playoffs have a way of producing unlikely heroes and, one game into the post season, the Oakville Buzz already has one. Defensive specialist Drew Petkoff scored twice in the third period as the Oakville Buzz edged the Halton Hills Bulldogs 11-8 in the opener of the teams' Ontario Lacrosse Association Jr. B playoff series Monday at Maplegrove Arena. "He's gone from the ugliest stick in the league to the hottest stick in the league," said Buzz coach Glen Little. "He's not the prettiest to watch but he's a great athlete. It's just that he's not known for his offence." Petkoff had four goals in 14 games before exploding for four in the regular season finale. Monday, with the Buzz clinging to a 98 third-period lead, Petkoff struck for another and then sealed the victory with an empty netter. Little said it's the type of performance his team will need if it is to make a long playoff run. "We know guys are going to key on Thenny (Brenden Thenhaus) and (Josh) Smyth," said the coach. "They're the number-one and number-three scorers in the league." While they each delivered a goal in the victory, it was two-goal performances by Petkoff, Brian Rea and Sean Thomson that made the difference. Oakville jumped out to a 3-0 lead but Halton Hills narrowed the gap to 4-3 by the end of the first and took 5-4 lead in the second. The teams went to the dressing rooms tied 8-8 after two and Little lit into his players. "I told them that we didn't go 19-1 just to give away home floor advantage in the first game of the playoffs," said Little, before adding, "That's being delicate." Thomson, who continued his stellar faceoff work, broke the deadlock in the third and the Buzz shut down the Halton Hills offence in the final 20 minutes. Chris Moulson and Josh Rhys had the other Buzz goals while Rea chipped in with three assists. Thenhaus and Jordan MacIntosh each had two helpers. The Buzz will be looking to take a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series Thursday in Georgetown (7 p.m. at the Alcott Arena). Little anticipates the Bulldogs will come out hard at home. "They're going to throw everything at us in the first 10 minutes and try to blow us out in their building," he said. "I don't expect anything easy." -- Herb Garbutt can be reached at sports@oakvillebeaver.com. CONFIRM YOUR SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION NOW!!
